lordkez Reminded COLORS What SA R&B Feels Like

Some artists perform for a room. lordkez performed for a decade of herself.

There’s a unique silence inside a COLORS performance. No crowd, no distractions just an artist and their sound. On June 1, 2026, lordkez stepped into that space in Brooklyn, New York, and delivered a performance that felt less like an introduction and more like a confirmation.

Kimberley to Brooklyn — A Line That Was Always Being Drawn

Born in Kimberley and shaped across borders, lordkez has spent years building a career rooted in authenticity. Her 2023 album Testament won a South African Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, while collaborations with Bas, Shekhinah, Jelani Blackman, and Cassper Nyovest expanded her reach without changing her voice.

Her COLORS appearance came through EMERGENT, the global programme created by Levi’s® and COLORSxSTUDIOS to spotlight artists at defining moments in their creative journeys. Out of six artists selected from six countries, South Africa’s representative was lordkez. That choice speaks volumes.

Wena Fela — Giving Away Your Best Secret

Rather than perform a familiar hit, lordkez debuted Wena Fela, an unreleased track she had been quietly introducing at live shows. Inspired by the warmth of 80s and 90s R&B, the song carries a distinctly South African softness that feels both intimate and universal.

Choosing to unveil an unreleased song on one of the world’s most influential music platforms wasn’t a gamble. It was confidence.

What lordkez Said — In Her Own Words

EMERGENT also featured two companion films: Side A / Side B, exploring the influences that shape her identity, and 5:01, an intimate look into her creative process during the early hours of the morning.

Reflecting on the recognition, lordkez said:

“The journey in discovering my personal identity has happened through my greatest passion, which is making music. I found myself becoming more of myself with every new step I took. Being recognised within EMERGENT as a voice that represents where I come from on a global scale is a huge honour.”

The power of that statement lies in its honesty. She’s not claiming to have arrived she’s embracing the process of becoming.

The Evolution Is Visible

This wasn’t lordkez’s breakthrough. It was her confirmation.

The breakthrough happened through years of consistent work: award-winning music, sold-out performances, and major stages. COLORS simply placed a global spotlight on what was already there.

Her growing international presence isn’t a pivot it’s the natural progression of an artist whose music has never recognized borders.

What It Means to Be First From Somewhere

lordkez became the first artist from Kimberley to perform on COLORSxSTUDIOS. For anyone who grew up in a smaller city, that milestone means more than music. It’s proof that where you begin does not determine where you can go.

Her journey creates possibility for others who see themselves in her story.

The Album Is Coming. The Story Isn’t Over.

Wena Fela is only a preview of what’s ahead. With a sophomore album in progress, a debut tour on the horizon, and a growing global audience, some of the biggest chapters of lordkez’s career are still unwritten.

But for one unforgettable moment in a Brooklyn studio, she stood in the COLORS room she had dreamed about for years and introduced the world to a song it had never heard before.

They know now.
