From Journals and Heartbreaks to a Sound of Healing
For South African artist Nayma Rias, music has always been closely connected to her personal experiences. What began as childhood performances with her sister and cousin eventually developed into a deeper form of self-expression, with poetry and journaling becoming the foundation for the music she would later create.
Now, that journey continues through RED Reloaded, a project that reflects the growth, change and emotional evolution that have shaped Nayma as both an artist and a young woman.
Born and raised in South Africa, Nayma spent her early years in Pretoria before moving to Johannesburg during her teenage years. She would eventually complete her high school and university journey at the University of the Witwatersrand. Long before stepping into the studio, however, music was already part of her world.
Her early influences came from both music and film. Movies such as The Cheetah Girls, High School Musical and Jump-in introduced her to the world of performance, while artists including Rihanna, Beyoncé, Amy Winehouse and Chris Brown helped shape her musical imagination.
Those early experiences became the starting point for an artist who would eventually turn her own life into music.
Turning Personal Experiences Into Music
As Nayma grew older, writing became an important part of how she processed her experiences. Poetry and journaling gave her a place to document her emotions, particularly her experiences with heartbreak and the challenges that came with growing up.
Those personal writings eventually transformed into lyrics.
In November 2020, Nayma introduced herself through her first EP, Get to Know Me. The six track project explored deeply personal themes, including mental health struggles, heartbreak, love and grief. It established an important part of her artistic identity and showed her willingness to turn personal experiences into something listeners could connect with.
But RED represented a different stage of that journey.
Understanding the Meaning Behind RED
When Nayma released RED, she chose the colour deliberately. For her, red carries different meanings depending on the person looking at it.
“Red is a colour we can all resonate to and a colour in which we all view differently, some of us see love and some see pain with red,” she explains.
That idea sits at the heart of the project.
Red can represent love, passion and desire, but it can also represent pain and difficult emotions. For Nayma, those contradictions created the perfect space to explore a period of significant personal change.
The project was born from what she describes as uncomfortable growth, the kind of growth that comes from life changing in ways that force you to see yourself differently.
RED Reloaded: Revisiting the Story
With RED Reloaded, Nayma continues to build on the world introduced through RED.
The project represents a chapter shaped by change. Rather than presenting growth as something simple or effortless, Nayma’s story acknowledges that becoming a different version of yourself can be uncomfortable.
The changes taking place in her life created a desire for something new and something whole, a life and an artistic identity centred around healing, love and peace.
That emotional shift gives RED Reloaded its significance.
It is not simply about moving away from difficult experiences. It is about understanding them, accepting the growth they created and allowing that growth to influence what comes next.
A Different Version of Nayma
There is a clear sense of evolution in Nayma’s journey from Get to Know Me to RED Reloaded.
Her first project opened the door to her most personal struggles, giving listeners insight into heartbreak, grief, love and mental health. RED then introduced a new perspective shaped by change and the desire for healing.
RED Reloaded continues that progression.
It represents an artist who has experienced different stages of herself and is now using music to document where she is going. The project becomes part of a larger story about growing through difficult moments while still making space for love, peace and new beginnings.
Music as a Reflection of Growth
What makes Nayma Rias’ story compelling is the connection between her life and her creativity. Her music did not begin with a carefully constructed image. It grew from the things she was already writing down privately.
The poems became lyrics. The lyrics became songs. Those songs became projects that allowed other people to connect with experiences of their own.
With RED Reloaded, that process continues.
Nayma is taking the emotions and experiences that have shaped her and turning them into another chapter of her artistic journey. The project reflects an artist who is still evolving, still discovering herself and allowing that evolution to be heard.
The Story Continues
From performing at family functions as a young girl to developing her own voice through poetry, journaling and songwriting, Nayma Rias has spent years building towards this moment.
RED Reloaded stands as part of that journey, a continuation of a story rooted in emotion, change and personal growth.
For Nayma, red has never represented just one thing. It can be love or pain. It can represent where you have been or where you are going.
Through RED Reloaded, Nayma Rias continues to explore what happens when you allow yourself to grow beyond the person you once were.
