MALIA Finds an Unexpected Home in South Africa With Touch

There is something special about an artist building a genuine audience in a country they have never even visited.

For American neo-soul and R&B artist MALIA, South Africa has become exactly that.

Without performing a single show in the country, MALIA has quietly developed one of her strongest international audiences through streaming, with Johannesburg now ranking among her top cities worldwide.

Now, with her latest single “Touch,” she is finally beginning to introduce herself to the South African listeners who found her first.

The numbers tell an interesting story.

Spotify recently revealed that South Africans streamed more than 8.5 billion minutes of R&B in 2025, equivalent to more than 142 million hours of listening.

MALIA’s growing audience fits into that wider appetite for R&B, particularly the alternative R&B and neo-soul sounds that continue to find space among South African listeners.

“I’m honestly so grateful that South Africa discovered my music before I even had the chance to come there,” MALIA says. “It means so much to know that people connected with my music organically and made space for it in their lives.”

And clearly, they have.

MALIA has now surpassed 100 million streams across her catalogue and has more than 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. In just a few months, she has also gained approximately 70,000 TikTok followers from South Africa.

Enter Touch

Her new single feels like an appropriate introduction.

“Touch” explores the early stages of attraction, where chemistry is present but nothing has been rushed. MALIA sings about curiosity, vulnerability and allowing a connection to develop naturally.

The production remains understated, leaving space for her soulful vocals and intimate songwriting to carry the track.

“I wanted the song to feel intimate and honest while still leaving room for the listener to interpret it in their own way,” MALIA explains.

It’s the kind of R&B that doesn’t need to shout to get your attention.

More Than Just Streaming Numbers

MALIA’s growing South African following becomes even more interesting when you look at her career outside the country.

She was personally selected by Alicia Keys to record a commemorative cover celebrating the 20th anniversary of Songs In A Minor, with the recording later featured on Alicia Keys’ Spotify profile.

She has also toured with Corinne Bailey Rae and JMSN, opened for Syd, and is a Fender and Martin Guitar artist.

These experiences have helped shape an artist whose music sits comfortably between neo-soul, alternative R&B and personal songwriting.

MALIA’s latest album, If I’m Being Honest, released on 3 July 2026, explores self-discovery, love, boundaries and personal growth.

Now, Touch opens another door.
