AMA Is Bringing Her Sound To South Africa For LYFE 2026

AMA Is Bringing Her Sound To South Africa For LYFE 2026

South Africa is about to welcome another international voice into its R&B conversation.

On October 31, London raised singer songwriter AMA, formerly known as AMA LOU, will make her way to Johannesburg for LYFE 2026, Y’s annual music and lifestyle festival taking place at Marks Park in Emmarentia.

But this isn’t simply a case of an international artist touching down in Mzansi.

AMA arrives alongside a lineup that reflects the growing space being created for alternative R&B, soul and genre bending music in South Africa, with Shekhinah, Thando Zide, Lusanda, Umzulu Phaqa and Jabulile Majola also set to perform.

For a scene that has spent years proving that R&B has a place within South Africa’s musical landscape, the lineup feels particularly fitting.

AMA Meets Mzansi

AMA has built her sound around movement.

Her music draws from contemporary R&B and neo soul while pulling in elements of garage and drill, giving her a sound that doesn’t sit comfortably inside one genre.

That makes her arrival in Johannesburg interesting.

South Africa has its own history of artists refusing to stay inside neat musical categories, and LYFE puts that spirit directly on the stage.

AMA will be performing alongside artists who are approaching R&B and soul from completely different directions.

Shekhinah brings years of experience and an unmistakable emotional quality to her music. Thando Zide continues to carve out space for Afro soul and contemporary R&B, while Lusanda and Umzulu Phaqa bring their own identities into a lineup designed around discovery.

It isn’t one sound.

That’s the point.

Shekhinah, AMA And A New Conversation

There is something especially interesting about having AMA and Shekhinah on the same bill.

Shekhinah has spent years pushing South African R&B forward, both through her own music and through platforms such as Rosefest, which has helped create visibility for women working across the country’s R&B and soul scenes.

She has also spoken openly about the growing strength of South African R&B, pointing to artists such as Lia Butler, Thando Zide, Manana and Lloyiso as part of a wider movement.

Now, LYFE creates another opportunity for those sounds to meet an international artist.

The interesting part isn’t simply that AMA is coming to South Africa.

It’s that she is arriving into a scene that already has something to say.

A Festival Built Around Discovery

LYFE isn’t being presented as a festival built around one genre.

Y describes the experience as a musical journey moving through R&B, neo soul, contemporary jazz and alternative sounds, bringing together South African and international musicians.

That makes the lineup feel less predictable.

You can arrive because you know Shekhinah.

You can discover AMA for the first time.

You might already be following Thando Zide or Lusanda.

Or you could walk away talking about an artist you had never heard before.

That sense of discovery is what makes festivals like this important for scenes that are still growing.

Johannesburg Gets A Meeting Point

On October 31, Marks Park becomes a meeting point between different parts of the R&B and alternative music world.

There is the international perspective coming through AMA.

There is the established South African voice of Shekhinah.

And then there is a younger generation of artists continuing to expand what soul music can sound like in Mzansi.

That combination says something about where the culture is moving.

South African R&B doesn’t need to sound one particular way to belong in the conversation.

It can be soulful. Alternative. Experimental. Afro influenced. Jazz touched. Electronic. Traditional. Modern.

It can sound like home while still reaching somewhere else.

LYFE 2026

LYFE 2026 takes place on Saturday, 31 October 2026 at Marks Park, Emmarentia, Johannesburg, running from 10:00 to 20:00. Tickets are currently listed from R295, with VIP options also available. The event is presented by Y in collaboration with Nothing Even Matters.

And with AMA making her South African appearance alongside some of the country’s most compelling R&B and alternative voices, this feels like more than another festival date.

It feels like a conversation between scenes.

London meets Johannesburg.

International R&B meets Mzansi soul.

And for one Saturday, the two get to share the same stage.
