Tyla Wants You to “Feel Something,” and the Rest of A*Pop Is Listening
Not every song on an album is built to be a single. Some exist to hold the emotional core of the record together, and on APop*, that job falls to “Feel Something,” a track tucked into the middle of Tyla’s sophomore album that asks a simple, aching question: what does it take to actually feel anything at all?
A Request Wrapped in a Groove
“Feel Something” finds Tyla in a familiar position, sensual, confident, dressed in the kind of twitching bassline that’s become her signature, but the lyrics pull toward something more vulnerable underneath the surface. She’s not just performing desire here, she’s asking for it to be real. It’s less about seduction as a display and more about seduction as a plea: make this mean something.
That tension between polish and yearning is part of what makes the song stand out on an album that otherwise leans into high-gloss, dance-floor-ready pop. Where tracks like “Chanel” and “She Did It Again” are built for movement, “Feel Something” slows the pace just enough to let the emotional stakes show through.
Part of a Bigger Rollout
“Feel Something” lives inside APop*, Tyla’s 14-track sophomore album released July 24 via Epic Records, the long-awaited follow-up to her Grammy-winning self-titled debut. The album arrived after a massive rollout, listening events in London, Atlanta and New York, a headlining Today Show performance, a halftime slot at the WNBA All-Star Game, and a run of pre-released singles including “Chanel,” “Is It,” “Is It Love” and “She Did It Again.”
As part of that campaign, Tyla partnered with Vevo on an Official Live Performance series, an ongoing set of visuals built to extend the world of each song beyond its studio version. The series opened with “Is It Love,” staged in a stripped-back industrial space bathed in sepia light, with more performances from the album promised to roll out in the following weeks. It’s the kind of format that suits a song like “Feel Something” well: intimate, performance-first, built to let the emotion of the track breathe without added spectacle.
The Album’s Emotional Undercurrent
Across APop*, Tyla trades some of the high-energy bravado of her debut for a broader emotional register, more mood, more restraint, more room for longing. “Feel Something” sits right at the center of that shift. It doesn’t try to be the loudest moment on the record. Instead, it captures something quieter and more universal: the exhaustion of going through the motions of connection and wanting, just once, for it to actually land.
That’s arguably the throughline of APop* as a whole. Tyla has spent two years becoming one of pop’s most magnetic new stars, but this album suggests she’s just as interested in what happens underneath the charisma, in the moments where the performance drops and the feeling has to be real.
